Using the Internet Assistant to help you set up your Macintosh Internet Assistant This will take you through the process of setting up an internet connection using the Internet Assistant.
Step 1 Find the Internet Assistant icon or alias and double click on it to activate the application.
Step 2 Read the instructions and then select the next screen (Screen number 2).
Step 3 What you need to do here is select "add internet configuration. Unless you are modifying a configuration that has already been created. If your computer is on a Local Area Network (LAN) then a option generally called 'ethernet' will already exist. This should not be altered as it may cause problems with your existing network system.
Step 4 Create a new configuration for yourself. While the name of the configuration is irrelevant to its operation it is a useful habit to name it after the connection host.
Since this will be a connection using a modem this option should be selected.
Step 5 With this step we will start configuring our computer. The first option is to select from the listing the brand and model of the modem that will be used to connect to the internet. The next step after this is to specify the port on the back of your Macintosh. The most common port is the one with the symbol of the telephone on it. This is the modem port. Some earlier modems used the printer port but it is unlikely that this will be the case. After this the type of phone line to be used will need to be specified. The most common option will be tone rather than pulse and this option should be chosen unless you know for sure that you are using a pulse line.
Step 6 Now that we have the modem information entered the next step is to supply the settings for your own individual connection. The first step is to enter in the telephone number for the access number. The dialup number may need to be modified if a outside line is required. If to get an outside line the user would normally type a '0' first then the number will be (0 123 4567) or try (0,123 4567). The comma will make the modem wait 3 seconds before it dials the main number and this is a useful option since it creates a pause that allows for the outside line to come into action. If the user is dialing from a remote area then a prefix will be required (03 123 4567). The next step will be for the user to type in their user name, e.g. ccwxxxx@ccwebs.com, and your password, e.g. password.
